Tintypes
Tintypes, also known as ferrotypes, began showing up in the 1850’s, and stayed around until the early 1900’s.
Tintypes are made by creating a direct postive on a sheet of iron metal that is blackened by painting,
laquering, or enameling.

Ambrotype Photographs
The ambrotype was popular from the 1850’s to 1890’s. The image is made as a negative on a piece of glass,
then placed against a black background to make it look like a positive. Ambrotypes were also popular due to
their appearance. They were better than the shiny, easy-to-tarnish daguerreotypes, they made for
a cleaner looking finish.

Dog Cabinet Photographs
Cabinet card photographs were introduced in the 1860s. They are similar to cartes-de-visites, only larger.
Measuring approximately four inches by six inches and mounted on card stock. Cabinet card photos got their
name from their size, they were just the right size to be displayed on a cabinet. Most of the cards were
produced between 1860 and 1890.
