Pair of Parian Ware Dog Sculptures By Daniel Chester French
Pair of Parian Ware dog sculptures by Daniel Chester French. Daniel Chester French (1850 - 1931) is well known as the sculptor who created the massive statue of Abraham Lincoln which sits in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. The sculptures are titled "Imposing on Good Nature" and "Retribution". Both have the artist's name "D.C. French" impressed on side of base. They sculptures are 5" in height and 6 1/4" in length. The Imposing on Good Nature has the tip of small dog's tail missing and tip of his right ear missing. Retribution has the small dog's right fore leg repaired, bottom portion of his his left rear leg missing, crack across large dog's left rear leg. No other restorations. A lovely and rare pair. William Schinzel. C1890. The painting measures 22" x 35". The old wood frame has a gold finish and is 28" x 42" inches. There is overall crazing. The painting has two spots where the paint has flecked off. One is on the back of the dog. Measures about 1/8" in size. Another is verytiny and barely can be seen. It looks like the gold on the frame has been touched up and when they touched it up there is very small trace amounts on the painting. The signature which is difficult to see, is signed Wm Schinzel. Painting was acquired in England and the seller stated the painting was late 19C or early 20C. Painting is canvas on board. Back of painting is printed Royal Board, made in Sweden.
